Everyone had a wonderful time in KS1 today taking part in two House Teams events.
The Tug of War, was by far the most competitive event, with a special well done to Amelia Holmes, Wenjie Yang, Carter Howe and Amelia-Hope Barnes for your extraordinary effort and 'never give up' attitude - you were our House Heroes!
This month we have been lucky to have some amazing visitors come into school to talk about their jobs and roles within our local community. The children have been in awe, and inspired by the different jobs that some of them never knew even existed.
We had special visits from a local mural artist, Hazel Oakes, who works under the artist's name 'Nocciola the Drawer', a vet surgeon, a midwife and a travel agent. This week, we were lucky enough to spend some time with two nurses, with one who works for the Royal Army Medical Service.
The children asked interesting questions and were intrigued to find out more about the different industries our visitors came from.
The children went on to complete profiles about each one and got to choose whether they would like to do that job in the future.
Some of the visitors brought in props and kit for the children to explore and have fun with which was a popular experience.
A big thank you to all our visitors for taking the time out of their busy day to come and talk to us about their special roles.
This week in computing KS1 have been learning about collecting and presenting data. They have learnt that data is just simply, information, that we can refer to, examine and investigate.
This week KS1 collected information about the different wildlife on the field and some of the Year 1's collected data about the number of pets everyone had. They learnt how to use tallies to record their findings quickly and efficiently.
The children presented their findings in the format of a bar chart to make it easier to understand. They learnt how to input the data into the computer and save their work on the system ready for printing, the output.
The children used the bar chart to answer questions such as which is the most and least popular class pet and what is the most common insect found on the school field.
For the last 2 weeks, year 1 and 2 have been learning all about plants. We have looked at a variety of different plants and labelled roots, the stem, leaves, flower and the anther.
We have also conducted an ongoing scientific experiment to test which conditions are the best for growing plants. We have planted broad bean seeds in 3 different conditions. Seed 1 has been planted with access to water and sunlight. Seed 2 has water but no sunlight and seed 3 has sunlight but no water. Which seed do you think will grow the best?
Finally, we grew our own cress and as some of you have already seen, it was a success!
We have had lots of fun dressing up for World Book Day! Have a look at our costumes - the VOC had a tough job deciding who should win! Well done to everyone, we thought you all looked great!
We had such a varied range of characters and some amazing t-shirt designs too. It is wonderful to see so many children enjoying reading for pleasure!
Over the past two weeks we have been studying DT and in particular, food technology. We discovered what it means to be self sufficient and we made links with a book we have recently read in English - Oliver's Vegetables.
We looked at the TV Chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and discovered that he tries to be self sufficient by using the ingredients he grows in his TV show called 'River Cottage'. We had the exciting task of designingand making a vegetarian dish that could be made using home grown ingredients. We decided to make a salad and a fruit salad with meringue.
We used skills such as peeling, grating and chopping and we used techniques such as the bridge and claw hold for chopping. We made sure that we used the equipment safely and made sure that we were hygienic by washing our hands and the area that we used to prepare the food. Finally, we evaluated our dishes and discussed what we thought went well or what we might change next time.
We tasted the food and had mixed opinions but we certainly had fun, regardless!
