PE Curriculum
Intent
At Crook Primary, we believe that every child should be physically active. As much of today’s lifestyle is sedentary, it is of paramount importance to encourage pupils to be healthy and fit so that they will be healthy in later life. We believe that sport encourages pupils to be confident, succeed in physically demanding activities and improves mental health and well being by giving pupils the opportunity to develop long term hobbies and interests. At Crook Primary we also believe that pupils should have the opportunity to compete in sport and other activities that build character, adventure and exploration. Through sport we encourage and teach explicitly self responsibility, teamwork, fairness, respect, resilience and a sense of fair play.
Implementation
PE is taught throughout the school by our specialist PE Lead allowing them to develop pupils as they go through school and to develop talent and specific interests. For each year group, there are a set of non- negotiables of skills and age related expectations which are then taught through the different strands of PE. Invasive games, gymnastics, fitness, athletics and dance are taught over the year in blocks to allow for progression of skill in each year group.
In addition, outdoor and adventurous activities are taught weekly through the COJOs scheme, whilst pupils also take part in the daily mile. Through our local PE cluster, we give pupils the opportunity to take part in festivals and competitions with other schools. Pupils are also encouraged to have experience of other sports such as judo, martial arts, cricket, hoopstars by taster sessions from visiting coaches.
Impact
We ensure that our PE curriculum is progressive and allows pupils to develop fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities. All pupils are provided with the necessary skills and given opportunities to demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best. Our pupils are physically active, and this has a positive impact on their learning in the classroom. Pupils understand how to lead a healthy lifestyle and understand the importance of regular exercise. We aspire for pupils to enjoy PE and develop a love of sport and physical activity which becomes part of their future life outside of primary school. We aim for all Year 6 pupils to leave school with the skills to competently swim at least 25m and have the skills to self-rescue in the water which are key life skills.
Pupils will be formatively assessed weekly against key skills to inform teaching. At the end of each unit of activity, pupils will be summatively assessed against the PE non-negotiables. Pupils will be summatively assessed at the end of each year and be deemed to be working at either age related expectations or not.
